Description

This law is the first in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to focus on reparations for wartime sexual violence. Previous to the adoption of this law, the Parliament of the Democratic Republic of the Congo had adopted several laws relevant to victims of sexual crimes, but there was no clear definition of their rights and the principles that should govern their situation. Furthermore, many of these previous laws dealt with victims of gender-based violence in general and did not focus specifically on victims of wartime sexual violence. For all these reasons, the Parliament adopted this law. It contains specific provisions for children of victims of sexual violence (art. 9). This law also creates a fund geared toward providing effective responses to the victims of wartime sexual violence.
