What do attacks against schools and hospitals look like on the ground?

As one of the six grave violations scrutinized by the UN’s Monitoring & Reporting Mechanism (MRM) on children and armed conflict, attacks against schools and hospitals have featured in both country-specific and annual reports of the Secretary-General to the UN Security Council. The following types of actions have been included as issues of concern:

• Direct attacks on educational and medical facilities
• Threats and attacks against students, educational and medical personnel
• Use of schools and hospitals for purposes other than educational/medical
