2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the UN Security Council protection of civilians in armed conflict agenda, as well as the 70th anniversary of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. Despite the important strides taken to advance the protection of civilians over the past twenty years, civilians continue to disproportionately suffer from the devastating consequences of armed conflict.

On these important anniversaries, a group of 22 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) call for actions to strengthen the protection of civilians in armed conflict. Together, the NGOs urge Security Council members, the UN Secretary-General, and all UN Member States to meaningfully improve civilian protection in country-specific situations and advance an ambitious vision for the protection of civilians agenda.
