July 2026 — Canada launched the Vancouver Principles on Peacekeeping and the Prevention of the Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers in 2017. Nearly a decade on, Vancouver Principles in Practice documents meaningful progress in implementing the Principles across the peacekeeping ecosystem — by Member States, the United Nations, regional organizations, and civil society. This progress has occurred during a period where UN peace operations have declined sharply while grave violations against children have nearly doubled. This brief identifies promising practices in policy, doctrine, training, and in-mission implementation, and proposes further action for endorsing and non-endorsing countries to deepen implementation across an evolving peacekeeping landscape.
