Highlights of 2013 include a new comprehensive report on children and armed conflict in Mali. The report gave special attention to the impact of the conflict on education. Watchlist used the report to urge Security Council Members to better prepare military troops to deal with children and armed conflict issues. Watchlist’s calls for pre-deployment child protection training were later echoed in Security Council Resolution 2143, adopted in March 2014. In 2013, Watchlist also launched “Monthly Updates” targeting the Security Council with specific recommendations to mainstream children and armed conflict issues in its agenda, especially when discussing mandates for peacekeeping operations. As a result, there has been an increase in attention to issues of child protection when setting up or renewing UN missions.
