Description

This document offers an assessment of trends in child marriage in South Sudan and across the globe, as well as the drivers and consequences of child marriage in South Sudan. The Strategic National Action Plan (SNAP) defines child marriage as marriage involving an individual who is under the age of 18 years old. The SNAP presents strategic directions forward for ending child marriage in South Sudan and identifies five focus areas, those being:

  1. Improved policy and legal environment to protect children and promote the girl-child’s rights
  2. Empowerment of both girls and boys with correct information, skills and networks
  3. Improved access to quality and equitable sexual and reproductive health services, education, child protection services and other opportunities for adolescent girls
  4. Educating and mobilizing parents and community members to change dominant thinking and social norms that sustain child marriage
  5. Improved knowledge and evidence-based planning, monitoring and evaluation, and coordination mechanisms for effective implementation of the SNAP
