The Armed Forces Act was adopted in Nigeria in 1994. Regarding recruitment and use of children the act states, in Article 28(2): “A recruiting officer shall not enlist a person under the apparent age of eighteen years, unless consent to the enlistment has been given in writing by that person’s parents or guardian or, where the parents or guardian are or is dead or unknown, by some person approved by the Chairman of the Local Government in which the person applying for enlistment resides or, in the case of a person who resides in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, by the Mayor.”
