Syria
Constitutional Provision
2012
In response to mass protests that began in Syria in March 2011, a new Constitution was adopted on February 26, 2012. This Constitution replaced the previous Constitution that had been in force since March 13, 1973, most notably abolishing the legal state of emergency.
Article 20 of the Constitution notes that the family is the nucleus of society and that the State is obliged to protect childhood, take care of young children and youth and provide suitable conditions for the development of their talents.
