The South Sudan Labour Act of 2017 defines a child as any person under the age of 18 years old. The act outlines what constitutes the worst forms of child labour. As stated in Section 13(2), the “worst forms of child labour include… all forms of slavery or practices similar to slavery, such as sale and trafficking of children, debt bondage and serfdom, forced or compulsory labour, and forced or compulsory recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.”
The act also prohibits forced labour. Section 10(1) states, “No person shall engage in the recruitment or use of forced labour or assist any other person to engage in such activities.” Section 10(2)(a) further specifies that “the recruitment of children for use in armed conflict shall be deemed to be forced labour.”
