The Law of Ukraine “On Social Protection of Children of War” establishes the key provisions for the protection of the rights of individuals who were under 18 years of age at the time of the end of World War II. This law aims to regulate determining the status of children of war and their social protection, as well as processes for providing benefits and state assistance to this category of individuals.
Article 1 provides key definitions, including the term “child of war,” which refers to Ukrainian citizens who were under 18 years of age as of September 2, 1945. The article also defines the term “state social guarantee,” which entails the minimum amount of state social assistance and benefits provided to support children of war.
Article 6 outlines the benefits for children of war, including the right to preferential job retention during staff reductions, the ability to take annual leave at a convenient time, the right to additional unpaid leave, and 100% sick leave compensation regardless of work experience. The law also guarantees the priority allocation of land plots for individual housing construction, gardening, or farming.
Furthermore, individuals who have the status of children of war and are persons with disabilities are entitled to inpatient medical care in veterans’ hospitals or military medical facilities. Hospitalization is provided based on relevant medical indications and the availability of free spaces. The law ensures additional social protection for this category of individuals, contributing to their well-being and health.
