BACKGROUND

Since the signature of the Action Plan between the Government of Nepal and the Maoist party, no cases of recruitment and use of children have been reported. As a result of the conflict, unexploded ordinances are left behind in civilian areas, which have led to killing and maiming of children. There has been a growing trend of involvement of children in political parties and rallies. This not only puts them at risk during demonstrations that often turn violent, but also greatly disrupts their education. Schools are reportedly being used as “recruitment” grounds by political parties and groups and a substantial number of school days are lost when children actively participate in political events and when schools are forced to close due to demonstration-related unrest.
